Quebec Venture Capital Community Takes Shape

Espace CDPQ, a Quebec-based venture capital community, was launched by La Caisse in 2016 to support innovation. The goal is simple: bring together networks, expertise, and resources to benefit local businesses.
Supporting Economic Development
La Caisse’s initiative aimed to strengthen the cohesion of a maturing ecosystem by gathering fund managers, investors, and various actors from the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This approach is part of a clear desire to support Quebec’s economic development through networks that can accelerate the transition from innovation to impact.
According to the report, La Caisse wanted to get closer to the venture capital ecosystem, bring people together, and better structure the industry. Kim Thomassin, first vice-president and chief, Québec, said: “By creating Espace CDPQ, we wanted to get closer to the venture capital ecosystem, bring people together, and better structure this industry.”
A Catalyst for Funds and the Ecosystem
The heart of this dynamic is the venture capital funds. La Caisse, through Espace CDPQ, acts as a catalyst for these key players by promoting their proximity, relationships, and sharing of practices. This concentration contributes to developing the skills of managers, strengthening collaboration mechanisms, and structuring an active and connected community.

La Caisse’s role is a complementary lever to investment. It allows them to act as an investor and influence the conditions of industry development. The approach is based on the conviction that the performance of an ecosystem depends as much on the quality of its interactions as on the amount of capital that circulates within it.
The exchanges that take place at Espace CDPQ – networking, knowledge sharing, joint initiatives – amplify the scope of each actor. They contribute to creating a more fluid environment in which ideas, expertise, and investment opportunities evolve more rapidly.
Ensuring Continuity to Create Value
This logic of convergence also translates into financing continuity. By facilitating relays between the different stages of development, Espace CDPQ contributes to mitigating disruptions in the companies’ journey. The proximity between actors promotes co-investments, accelerates decision-making, and supports the emergence of companies capable of growing in the long term.
Over the years, Espace CDPQ has become a collective transformation lever. Beyond its physical presence, it reflects the emergence of a culture of collaboration that goes beyond the organizations themselves. This dynamic also contributes to advancing issues – notably in terms of equity, diversity, and inclusion – carried by the funds themselves and integrated into the ecosystem’s practices.
